Skinny Spicy Margarita

Skinny spicy margaritas with fresh jalapeño and limes.

We love our skinny margaritas and this spicy recipe is one of our favorites. It combines all natural ingredients to create a light, refreshing cocktail that’s low calorie and low glycemic but full of flavor.

Most traditional margarita recipes and pre-maid mixes out there use processed, artificial, sugar-filled ingredients to make them sweeter. In our opinion, that is so unnecessary. Not only do those things add a ton of extra calories but they are terrible for you.

We use a hint of agave instead because it give us that hint of sweet with a much lower glycemic index rating than traditional sweeteners. That means it’s less likely to cause blood sugar spikes which can contribute to weight gain and make weight loss difficult.

Fun fact. Did you know, if you’re going to drink, blanco tequila is considered the best alcohol for you? Blanco is not only the most unprocessed tequila but also the most unprocessed alcohol. The less processed the alcohol the easier for the body to process and, in our experience, the less punishing the hangover.

Don’t like spicy? Skip the jalapeño and the chili flakes and you’ve got yourself a classic marg.

METHOD

  1. Fill your margarita glass with ice and set aside to chill.

  2. Add the sliced jalapeño, tequila, lime juice, and agave to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake for a few seconds. No shaker? Use another glass and stir ingredients together with a spoon.

  3. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass. Pour the chili flakes and salt onto a small plate then dip the top of the glass into the mixture to coat the rim. The lime juice will help it stick.

  4. Add the margarita mixture to your margarita glass and then add the sparkling water. Stir with a spoon.

  5. Garnish with a lime wedge and additional jalapeño slices as desired.

  6. Bottoms up!

Tips

  1. The higher the quality the blanco tequila the better the flavor and, in our experience, the less painful the hangover. Our favorite for day-to-day? Casamigos. Our favorite when we’re in the mood for a splurge? Casa Dragones.

  2. Agave is an all natural sweetener but it’s still sugar. If you want to avoid sugar all together, be sure to skip the agave. Can’t live without the sweet? Consider using a couple of drops of liquid stevia instead. Tread carefully! It changes the flavor profile of the drink significantly and is not everyone’s cup of tea.
